AT&SF Class 5001 Backhead
In this 26th installment of the ATSF 5001 saga, I show the detailing of the backheads. There are 19 photos attached showing the progress of this detailing. From past experience, I know to start at the center of the backhead and carefully plan when to install each part. The backhead gets really crowded and hard to add parts to in fairly short order. Most of the parts are readily available from PSC as noted on the photos. A few items have to be modified or even scratchbuilt. If someone else were to undertake this, you can get the custom ATSF oil door casting from Dennis Mashburn. It would be a bit tough to scratch build. The photos are mostly self explanatory, I hope.

I have decided to take a short break from this project. I’m having too many nightmares of being run over by 2-10-4s. But seriously, I do need a slight break in this rather long project, so I have reassembled the engines and set them aside for now. I’ve included some photos of the reassembled models, so you can see how far along they are. I have a number of “quicky” projects, repairs, etc., that I have been putting off due to these models plus the work for Key. I’m going to catch up a bit and do a fairly big project detailing and painting a pair of B&O EM-1s for C.O. Gibson. Then I’ll come back and finish these monsters.
